Men's Fashion this Spring Racing Carnival - Part 3

The classic 'Banker Shirt'
Shirts and ties: When you're thinking about what shirt to wear to the races, think like a Zebra and stick to monochrome.  At it's simplest, this could be a nice white shirt with a slim black tie but if you're after something a bit more adventurous, you should be able to find yourself a shirt that stands out.  My pick of the bunch is something like the black and white 'Banker Shirt' pictured below will not only stand out on the day, but will also look good at work after the racing season is over.  Something less conventional might be a black and white tablecloth check shirt like the Burberry one here.
Which ever way you run with your shirt selection, keeping it monochrome will look great with the nice black, charcoal or grey suit that you almost certainly purchased after reading part 2.

Your tie is your opportunity to have a flash of color or to match her outfit.  Find yourself a slim line tie that is similar but not exactly the same as her dress, and then find a pocket square that is similar as well. A nice touch is some cufflinks that match your tie too.

The big takeaways are:
a) your shirt should be monochrome
b) your tie should be a slim one and finally,
c) wear a double cuffed shirt with cufflinks.. always.  They don't cost much more than a normal shirt but they look heaps better!

Next time: Hats.. yes. Hats.

Men's Fashion this Spring Racing Carnival - Part 2

As I said, there are suits and then there are suits.  By following a few rules, you should be able to get a get a good looking suit regardless of your budget, and lets face it, the races may not be the best place to wear your most expensive suit.
For this season, think like Don Draper, not Gordon Gecko.
Black, charcoal or grey suits are the right way to go, and if you want a pattern on your suit rather than a Gecko style pinstripe, find yourself an obnoxious checked pattern or even get yourself a grey tweed.

Make sure that the lapels are thin notched lapels (Like Don's) , not gigantic wing tip lapels (like Gordon's).
Gordon Gecko - Wide Lapel

Don Draper
One thing that both of these guys had in common though, was their  religious use of pocket squares.  Again, this year run with a neatly folded white pocket square like Don Draper or Daniel Craig in James Bond, not with the big fluffy silk number as seen on Gordon Gecko or Matt Preston.

Next time:  Shirts and ties.

Men's Fashion this Spring Racing Carnival - Part 1

Here we are at the precipice of the Spring Racing Carnival, with Bendigo Cup next week and the Melbourne Cup and other meetings to follow.  The question remains, what should the discerning gentlemen wear this year? A suit naturally enough, but there are suits and there are suits...

The Orange Light - Part 5

This might be surprising to everyone, but I ran out of petrol over the weekend... in the lawn mower.  When I went to the petrol station to fill the mower petrol can I took the precaution of filling it with Premium Unleaded.... just in case I need to top the car up!

The Dentist

Went to the dentist to get my tooth fixed.  When I told the dentist that I hadn't been in about 8 years because I hadn't needed to, she told me to stop being such a man! Last time I went to the dentist I was told to stop being such a girl!
